Gateway to the Oregon Caves

As towns in Oregon go, Cave Junction is rather new. About 1926 a local businessman established the town at the junction of the Redwood highway and the road to the Oregon Caves national monument. The enduring interest in the Oregon caves makes for good business in Cave Junction. It's location on the banks of the beautiful Illinois river helps also. The Oregon gold rush of the 1850's included this area, but logging and milling eventually took over. After the 1960's even the timber industry declined. Cave Junction focuses on tourism now, and is known as a nice retirement area.
