Wamic
In pioneer days Wamic was near the start of the famous Barlow trail. If you could not bring yourself to run the rapids on the Columbia (and probably lose a cow or two or even a kid) you could take the Barlow trail. Although charged a toll at the start, the hardy souls who used the Barlow trail built it as they went. In places the wagons had to be taken apart and let down the "trail" on ropes!
Now Wamic is mostly famous for being near the Rock Creek resevoir and Pine Hollow, a substantial vacation home development. Still Wamic is a very pleasant little place. Check out this link for a description more poetic than I can devise.
