In 1847, John Damond and Jocob Spores, pioneers and adventureres, left Chicago for Oregon to take
advantage of the Donation Land Act. Spores staked claim near the banks of the McKenzie River
and the bachelor Diamond settled on a site that is present-day Coburg. Spores would run the first
local ferry service across the river--with two canoes lashed together!
Diamond and Spores founded the area's first sawmill in 1855 on a stream of the McKenzie though
it washed away in the floor of 1861. The graves of Diamond, Spores, and other Coburg pioneers can be
found in the IOOF cemetery, just south of town, across from Egge Sand and Gravel.
