Brookings
Brookings is the most southerly settlement on the Oregon coast. The climate here is markedly warmer than the rest of the Oregon coast and the fishing is just a good. If the weatherman would have drawn the state line Brookings would have been included in California. A dense rain forest covers the mountains and pampas grass grows wild. The area is famous for it Easter lily production fields which spread along Hiway 99 all the way into California much like the cranberry bogs spread along the hiway near Bandon.
This little lighthouse overlooks the Brookings harbor. During the tourist season a variety of shops and restaurants
are open along with all the boating facilities and activities.
The whole southern Oregon coast is dotted with myrtle wood factories which make souvenirs from the unusual
Myrtle wood tree. If you are trying to identify a myrtle wood just rub a leaf then smell your hand. If the smell
is pungent and strong you have a myrtlewood.
