Amity used to be on the main road up the Willamette valley to Portland.

Amity
Amity is situated at a once important crossroad on Hiway 99-W. Before the development of Interstate Five major north south traffic passed through town. Things have changed a lot for Amity. Little used grain elevators line a little used railroad through town as grain growing has shifted from the Willamette valley to more economical areas.
The street scene pictures tells the story. As you might guess a couple of antique shops prosper on main street and other shops providing basic needs. Even the big white Baptist church, established in 1858, looks as if it could use a new foundation and a remodel. Maybe that's the way the residents feel also.
Four miles west of Amity is a Brigantine monastery which I have heard is well known for its Christmas fruit cakes. I will try to find out more about that.

Pictured is the Amity Baptist Church from the mid-1900's. Below that is one side of main street. The other side looks about the same.
