Canyonville
This used to be a sleepy little town with a couple of gas stations to feed the I-5 freeway. Then the seven local Indian bands built the Seven Feathers Casino and changed the face of town forever. The town is very much divided now with the Casino district on the north end being very prosperous looking and the southern and older part of town looking very much like it did in the 1960's
I remember Canyonville from my childhood simply as the junction where the road cut over to Shady Cove on the way to Crater Lake or Klamath Falls. The old second hand stores are now antique shops so if you are into old stuff it is a great little town. Or if you like to gamble. Otherwise the junction is still there.
I finally figured out who created this astounding sculpture. Turns out the artist lives within 10 miles of Canby which
we call home. The artist is Lorenzo Ghiglieri, a master who lives in Wilsonville, Oregon. Check out his web
I just had to show a close-up the the eagle and salmon to show the detail of Lorenzo's work.
The Applegate trail is famous in the Rogue river area but not many know it passed through Canyonville on the way to the Willamette valley. Not everyone savored the challenge of floating down the Columbia or crossing the Barlow trail.
The road is long gone but the bridge is still there over Canyon creek. Back in the 1960's a working covered bridge
still crossed the South Umpqua river at Days Creek. I haven't seen it for years.
I took this picture recently (8/2009) at the Cabin Creek rest area on I-5 in the vicinity of Oakland. I put the history
here because the Cow Creeks are one of the seven tribes who own the Seven Feathers casino.
