Winchester
Winchester is a small town just north of Roseburg on I-5 on the banks of the North Umpqua river. The name is easily confused with Winchester Bay but this place is far up stream from the ocean. Winchester has a dam on the North Umpqua which makes a nice lake. The dam also impedes the Salmon runs and produces some spectacular sights as the big fish try to get around or over the dam. This is the type of small dam which probably will be removed in the next 20 to 50 years.
This is Winchester Dam on the North Umpqua river. The structures in the lower left are the fish passage facilities.
Just out of the picture to the right is the old power house which I believe no longer operates. When the
salmon run is in full swing the fish will actually try to jump over the dam. Occasionally one makes it!
This is a closeup of the fish passage facility. The entry is at bottom center and the exit is at the upper left. Despite
the very swift current the Salmon move easily from each level up to the next.
Stop at the dam and make the walk down to the viewing rooms for the fish ladder facility. The rooms are damp
and cool but the big fish are amazing. Of course you have to catch it when the run is under way. If several cars
are parked above you can bet the fish are coming through!
