Westport
Westport is more an area than a town. It does have a nice restaurant but the main ticket here is the huge Wauna pulp mill. Wauna is a major employer and almost single handedly keeps the area alive. Hiway 30 westbound heads up sharply after Westport and the view back is tremendous. Not only does one see the smoke and belch of the pulp mill, but also the immense silent ocean freighters headed to Longview and Portland.
Looking back from Hiway 30. Pulp mils are great employers but a little tough on the environment.
This is the commercial center of Westport.
The channel to Longview and Portland is not deep so the big ships are usually riding high like this one. Typically the ships only carry partial or lighter loads up the Columbia river. When Mount St. Helens erupted the ash immediately filled the shipping channel. The first freighter along ran aground. (the channel is now being deepend from 40' to 43')
