Pictures for Riddle Oregon

The Main Street of Riddle.  Allen grew up near here and knows it well.  Not much has changed since the 1950's.

Not many lumber mills remain in the area other than the giant Roseburg lumber.  But here is the old D. R. Johnson Lumber mill hard at work.  As kids we used to call the owner "Dr. Johnson".  I don't think we knew any better.

The is the log handling section of the same mill.  In the 1950's all of the logs were floated about on ponds.  Now giant machines such as the one on the left simply pick the logs up to move them about.

The Hanna Nickel Smelting Co. left a big hole in the ground where the ore was removed and a big mountain of slag when the processing was through.  Here an enterprising operation processes the slag which has a very high glass content for sand blasting material.

This a comprehensive view of the same slag processing plant.  No that is not Nickel Mountain in the background.  It is a lot bigger than that!

Glennette liked this little hill rising above the D.R.Johnson plant so here you have it.  The slag plant shares the same view.
