Knappa
Knappa is more of an area than a town so you will not find a street map. The area exhibits a strong northern European flavor dating from the days when experienced loggers and mill hands came from Europe to work in the great northwest forests. They used to have a post office here, but the government shut it down in 1943. The local school district still bears the Knappa name.
We photographed this great Bald Eagle just before it dropped into Brownsmead slough to spear a fish. Such high drama
was not possible only a few years ago. Eagles are now a fairly common sight along the Columbia river.
The eagles are doing okay in Brownsmeade but the going is still tough for people.
