Winston
Winston has long been famous as the home of Wildlife Safari. I grew up not far from here and remember that the wild animal park in the early days was always on the verge of bankruptcy. It's survival is a great story of community involvement and small town economic development.
Winston is a junction town. Here is where Hiway 42 leaves the old Hiway 99 and crosses to the coast and Hiway 101. Appropriately enough a beautiful bronze cheetah sculpture stands guard over the junction now.

The Brockway Store used to see early morning elk hunters on their way to the Reston ridge area. Now it is empty but the building seems in good shape.
"In memory of KHAYAM" was placed in 1987 over watching the main junction. Cheeta's were successfully bred at Wildlife Safari and a big attraction.
And would you believe you can still buy a hamburger in Winston at a real drive-in? This A&W still has call boxes and service to your car. Sorry, the girls do not deliver on roller skates anymore!
