Wheeler
Wheeler lies along the southern edge of Nehalem bay. Downtown squeezes Highway 101 and the railroad track between itself and the bay. Unlike Nehalem itself, Wheeler sits above flood water. The homes on the hillside have fantastic views of the bay and Pacific ocean. The antique shopping here is good, but the waterfront is great. This is not the hustle and bustle of the Garibaldi waterfront, but the quiet peaceful waterfront of a town few know.
The Old Wheeler Hotel is now an antique shop and a good one at that. Built in the 1920's it replaced two structures
destroyed by fire.
When logging was big all of the coastal towns had rail service. Now such service is sporadic at best.
I think this is one of the best pictures on our site. This could be a Japanese wood block print, but is in fact Nehalem
bay at dusk from downtown Wheeler!
The mountains surrounding Oregon's coastal town are rugged as seen here overlooking Nehalem bay.
