Stanfield
Stanfield is pinched between I-84 to the south and the Columbia River to the north. In the bustle of modern life it is just barely hanging on. If it were not for Columbia river irrigation water Stanfield would be as empty as Shaniko.
These squatty little cut stone buildings show up on Main street corners throughout Oregon. We have one in
Canby and one in Molalla near where we live. I think they all used to be bank buildings and as such were built
like fortresses. The stonework in them is invariably excellent.
The name on the building tells you what is important in Stanfield. Without water this place is just sagebrush,
and maybe not even that since the freeway by-passes it to the south.
What stories this old water wagon could tell! This is dry country although the green one sees is deceptive.
Little towns along the Columbia all suck precious water from the dammed up Columbia to green their public
spaces and parks.
