Rufus
For most travelers Rufus is a blur as they zip by on I-84 at 70+ mph. The small town is about half way between The Dalles and Arlington and provides basic conveniences for travelers. The John Day dam and the John Day river recreation area are nearby. Just across the river is the Mary Hill museum and the replica of Stonehenge built by Sam Hill. Both of these are interesting stops even if they are in Washington.
Well, there you have it, downtown Rufus. A few highway services and a few houses squeezed between the gorge bluff and I-84.
When you are through looking at Rufus you can drive under the freeway and visit the John Day dam. At least you could before the terrorists blew up the World Trade Center. Security is much tighter now and all of the visitor center along the Columbia river dams are closed.
Preacher Eddy river access provides modern access facilities to tribal members. As I understand it these sites, and several exist, are for the exclusive use of treaty Indian tribes. This is an interesting bit of reverse discrimination, but unless the salmon return in significant quantities it won't make any difference anyway.
