Nehalem
This town is tucked inland just a bit so it does not receive the full force of the Pacific ocean storms. The storms push water back into Nehalem bay, however, and with high tide comes the flood. This place floods frequently. Main street is literally built about four feet above road level.
We pass through here frequently. From finding a Stueben pepper shaker in an antique shop to watching the merchants prepare for a coming flood we have fun and interesting memories of Nehalem.
This is what I mean about flood-proofing. The river flows directly behind these buildings and the stairs have a purpose!
This is the Nehalem river directly behind the shops on Main Street. What a tranquil scene. When the water is fifteen feet higher the outlook changes!
This photo is taken from the same place looking up stream. The banks a really quite low.
The back of the main street shops at low tide. No wonder they flood!
This bronze Kodiak bear dominates the main intersection in Nehalem. I could not find anyone who could name the artist, but my guess is Lorenzo Ghiglieri. This is the antique shop where we found the Stueben pepper shaker (and a number of other treasures over the years).
