Myrtle Point
Myrtle Point is far enough inland from the ocean to escape the worst of the winter weather yet it is close enough to enjoy the bounties of the beaches year around. Like Myrtle Creek, this town is named for the aromatic Myrtle trees that line the streams in the area.
The hilltop town site provides great views from most of its neighborhoods. The local A&W still provides car hop service just like the one in Winston.

Attesting to the area's legacy of logging and milling this Presbyterian church is built entirely of wood and dates from about 1890. We could not get a pictures of the stained glass windows because of the bright light but they are well worth stopping for a look.
An artist could leave out the power lines but our camera could not escape them. This is the Coos county logging museum in Myrtle Point. The entry door is a finely detailed carving which is worth inspection. In the far upper left of the picture is a branch from a huge Myrtlewood tree. Rub a leaf between your fingers to experience its signature smell. Towering behind the museum steeple is a Douglas fir, the main lumber producing species in the area.
