Moro
Moro is one of the small towns of the North Central Plateau. Agriculture is the economy and they have been at it so long the whole place looks like an antique shop. It is 20 miles north to Condon and 20 miles south to Grass Valley and you can't go sideways very far. If you are in Moro you might as well enjoy it. The town has a nice welcome sign and the state just rebuilt the highway so things might be looking up. We were there Sunday morning and had to go without breakfast as we did not know any of the locals.
How Moro came to be the county seat is a story I do not know, but I suppose it entailed a substantial amount of local politics and intrigue. Perhaps some day I can check that one out.
There you have it. Established in 1899 and they have had the welcome mat out ever since. Note beyond the sign on the right the yellow rose. That is one tough plant. They grow in almost every little east side town we visit.
All of the signs of life and prosperity in Moro are connected with the grain industry. All of the high plateau farms in Oregon and Washington ship their grain down the Columbia for transfer to ships.
These folks once had some class. This is the Moro Opera house looking like an antique shop these days.
Antiques seems to be the staple of downtown commerce. Although the paint is flaking this building is in better shape than most.
This is the antique store annex. I am thinking that on Friday afternoon a water truck fills these tubs up and they have a public bathing session, sort of like the Terme di Caracalla in Rome.
These folks enjoy a big open sky with lots of sunlight. And look what a nice job the state did on the highway. We see these rebuilt downtown roads around the state and are impressed. The highway department used to look for a way around the town. Now they are participating in the towns development and economy.
