Maupin
Historically life in Maupin centered around agriculture and that influence is still strong.  Now, however, fishing and the more modern pursuit of white water rafting seem to dominate the scene. Like most central Oregon towns the site is crouched below the surrounding plateaus for protection from the severe winter weather.  This affords almost everyone in town a dynamite view of the Deschutes river below.
The founders incorporated Maupin in 1922, some eleven years after the great train race ripped up both sides of the Deschutes canyon.  Outstanding murals depicting this event dot the town and are presented here.  The rest of the train race info is posted on the Metolius page.
